    Mission & History

    The mission of the UCSF Program in Surgery and Global Health is to create mutually beneficial collaborations between UCSF and universities in developing countries by committing to longitudinal relationships through bilateral exchange allowing the sharing of resources related to clinical, teaching and research endeavors.

    Specific Objectives for Residents

    • Gain clinical experience in the delivery of surgical care in developing countries
    • Increase awareness of the complicated barriers to health care in a more resource-poor environment

    Enhance cultural sensitivity and a global health perspective

    • Refine history and physical exam skills in an environment less dependent on technology
    • Explore international health as a potential career interest
    • Develop mentoring relationships with UCSF faculty interested in international health
    • Acquire proficiency in basic international health and public health issues
    • Contribute to building local capacity to train students/residents/health workers at the collaborating institution
    • Participate in research that addresses the health or the health services of a developing country

    Specific Objectives for Faculty

    • Mentor residents interested in international health
    • Contribute to training faculty/residents/students/health care workers at the collaborating institution, in a particular area of expertise
    • Explore an interest in international health
    • Facilitate collaboration through research projects with colleagues in the partner institution.

    Specific Goals for the Collaborating Universities

    • Establish academic relationships between UCSF and the collaborating universities
    • Increase interest and competitiveness in surgery residency programs
    • Create sustainable research programs that benefit both institutions by fostering long term, longitudinal research projects relating to utilization, quality of care, and the diseases of poverty
    • Demonstrate leadership in social justice and global health
    • Share clinical and teaching resources through visiting professor and resident exchange programs
